Joyce Siegel

Artist Statement

Joyce Siegel has been exploring the contradiction between spontaneity and control in her paintings. Her work is process oriented and focuses on the creation of the painting. She develops each piece in a spontaneous fashion. In some of her most recent work, Joyce includes stream of consciousness writings, poetry and newspaper clippings, before applying paint and masking tape. The rigidity of these resulting lines conceals some of the context of the writings. Essentially, her paintings look more like minimal, hardedge, line paintings than emotional outpourings.

Joyce also creates paintings using loaded words and phrases with multiple meanings and connotations. She is fascinated by the power of words. Initially, she uses a stencil and then hand paints the letters to illustrate the juxtaposition between the techno generated and the handmade.

Previously, the foundation of her work was repetitive images and grids. The image was a circle and was repeated to illustrate intensity and the grid masked this intensity.
