Artist Statement
Repetitive images and grids are the foundation of my work. The image, which is a circle or oval, is repeated to represent development. The grid represents the barriers and obstacles of contemporary life. I work primarily on paper because I love the spontaneity of drawing and am very interested in the surface and edges of paper. The creative process fascinates me, as one mark leads to the next mark and one drawing develops into the next drawing. I always want to be free to see where the creative process will take me. I am often fascinated and surprised by what develops.
Recently, I have added “loaded words or phrases” with multiple meanings and connotations to my repertoire. I have also painted over selected poems and newspaper articles leaving exposed words and phrases. Upon reflection, I have been exploring the contradiction between spontaneity and control.
